Rector
Bruce grew up in the East Bay and earned his undergraduate degree from U.C. Berkeley with majors in English and Social Welfare. After college, he worked as an Employee Benefits Consultant with a large law firm. Between his second and third year in the Master of Divinity program at Virginia Theological Seminary, Bruce served an internship at Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos. After graduation, and ordination at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, he was called to be the Associate Rector of St. Bede’s in Menlo Park. In 1997, Bruce accepted the call to be Rector of St. Clement’s.
Bruce has served on a number of boards and committees within the Episcopal Diocese of California and local community. He has taught as an Adjunct Faculty Member of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and has supervised about two dozen seminarians. Bruce also serves as the Chaplain to the St. Andrew’s Society of San Francisco, and in September of 2023 was appointed as one of the diocese’s Regional Deans for the Alameda Deanery.
In his spare time, he enjoys tennis, history, athletic events (particularly U.C. Berkeley teams), and spending time with family and friends. Bruce and his wife Michele, who teaches high school English in the Oakland Unified School District, were married at St. Clement’s in 1994. Their son Jeremy is also an ordained Episcopal clergyman.
